Recount In the November election, Fairfield Township's three-way race for two seats on the township committee was decided by just five votes. Incumbent Albert Beverly, who had 550 votes, lost out to former committeman Marvin Pierce, who had 600, and newcomer Patrick Conahey, who netted 555. Beverly claimed voting improprieties in challenging the results, but was granted a recount by Superior Court Judge Richard Geiger based on the narrow margin alone, and it was scheduled for December 21 at the County Board of Elections in Hopewell. Cumberland County Board of Elections members Ned Sawyers, left, and Jospeh DeMarco, center right, confer with Board of Elections chair Harry Peek, center left, on a questionable ballot as Patrick Conahey, right, looks on during the recount Friday. The three were comparing a voter's signature to one signed on an absentee ballot; because absentee ballots are secret and should not be signed, the board threw out that ballot, netting a loss of one vote for incumbent Albert Beverly.
