“A Year in Tent City” 9/12 Lakewood’s Tent City is that town’s worst-kept dirty little secret. About 40 homeless live at the homeless camp inside the township’s borders, led and cared for by Minister Steve Brigham who lives at the camp himself. Although the town has tried to close it, they have been unsuccessful to this point because there is a need for such a place. Minister Steve checks his phone for messages as he prepares to end a busy day and try and get some sleep. Steve Brigham, a local minister and homeless activist, was instrumental in establishing a homeless camp in the woods off Cedar Bridge Avenue in Lakewood more than three years ago. He has lived there himself, most recently in a donated school bus, for the past two years, using it as a base for his outreach ministry.
