“A Year in Tent City” 11/12 Lakewood’s Tent City is that town’s worst-kept dirty little secret. About 40 homeless live at the homeless camp inside the township’s borders, led and cared for by Minister Steve Brigham who lives at the camp himself. Although the town has tried to close it, they have been unsuccessful to this point because there is a need for such a place. Doug Hardman holds a photo of his wife who died several years ago from cancer. Chris Hardman and his father Doug both live in Lakewood’s “Tent City” after they lost their lagoon home due to Doug’s alcoholism. They initially went their separate ways but eventually both ended up at the camp. Chris may be homeless but is not helpless and works every day he can through Labor Ready in Lakewood.
