Even without much of a platform, Doug Forrester was leading in his bid to oust Senator Bob Torricelli. He ran as "I'm not Bob Torricelli." Torricelli realized he was going to lose and in the wake of personal scandals dropped out of the race 30 days before election day. Replacement candidate Frank Lautenberg received the Democratic spot on the ticket. In one day Forrester fell 30 points in the polls. The Democratic chaos dominated the media, obscured Forrester and in 30 days Forrester couldn't get a message, interest the media or the voters.
