RESEARCH RAT - While walking around in a black box, sensors are connected to electrodes that are embedded into the rat brain's entorhinal cortex. Rats are used in ongoing research to investigate the cognitive map created by grid cells in the brain's entorhinal cortex. Located next to the hippocampus, which is the seat of memory, the entorhinal cortex is a focus of research at the Center for the Biology of Memory in Trondheim, Norway. Neuroscientist Edvard Moser has discovered that the brain makes memories using a kind of GPS navigation system, and coding memories spatially. TRONDHEIM, NORWAY 10/8/07 3:36:28 PM
