Lucila Aguilar was one of several people who cried upon seeing what was done to the Virgin Mary shrine by the corner of Hope and Jefferson in Passaic. Aguilar is shown praying here in front of a Lady of Guadalupe statue. The city's DPW ripped down the cover of the memorial and piled mementoes that had been collected there in a big pile. A volunteer who came by to help sort everything that was salvageable, Donna Miehe said, "The word of the day is sac religious." A tree stump, which many believe looks like the Virgin Mary is what brings worshipers to the site on a daily basis. October 5, 2006. Herald News photo by, Kevin R. Wexler.
